Wednesday Hodgepodge: January 28, 2026

From this Side of the Pond

Good chilly Wednesday Besties! I had so much fun last week joining Wednesday Hodgepodge with From This Side of the Pond that I am linking up again! Grab a warm beverage and settle in for Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you're having today affect your mood in some way?

We had snow and then sleet/freezing rain over the weekend. We didn't have that much snow if you consider seven inches not a lot. I am from Boston so seven inches is not ton, but at this point it is completely frozen over. For the most part, you cannot remove the snow as it is solid ice.

I would say that the weather is impacting the mood in this house.

2.  Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?

Cabbage is not a vegetable high on my list, but I would rather have cabbage than cauliflower...blech. I think the only way I really like cabbage is raw and shredded. Every now and then I will eat cole slaw but it's not my favorite. I have friend who makes really Good cole slaw that is not mayo based and I do like that. IU also don't mind cabbage shredded in a fish taco.

3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children's childhood? What's a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?

I am about 3 years too old to be part of the Cabbage Patch Doll craze but I do remember it well. I was more of a Ballerina Barbie kind of kid. You could twirl her by her crown which was attached to her head.

4. Something you've spent a lot of time doing lately?

I mentioned last week that we have a 15 week old puppy. I have spent a lot of time layering up and letting him out in the cold and snow. He's a Good boy and very efficient handling his business thank heavens.

5. Somehow it's the last week of January...sum up your month in just three sentences.

January really has gone by in a flash. Here are the three sentences that sum up our January.

Our first few weeks of January we focused on spending as much time with Hockey Guy before he went back to college.

We also watched a heck of a lot of college football with our favorite team making the semi-finals in the college football playoffs in school history.

There is snow, there is ice, there is a lot of cold.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I have been watching The Beast in Me. I got to episode six the other day and just when tought it couldn't get any darker...it did. Let's just say, they won't be running this on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries any time soon. My random thought is more of a question. If you watched this, would you keep going or just skip it and read the Wikipedia page to find out the ending?

That's it for this week's Hodgepodge. Join me back here tomorrow for Monthly Musings!

  1. Someone else mentioned The Beast and I googled it to see if we might want to watch. It sounded dark and I wasn't in the mood for that. Puppy training in winter can be a tough job : ) Dogs keep us moving though and that's a good thing. Have a great day!

  3. Oh gosh! That snow and ice sounds awful. I hope it clears soon.
Ahh! I feel the same about cauliflower. Yuck and I loved my Barbie dolls!
I am glad your puppy has been a good boy, especially with the weather you have had.
I think I will be giving The Beast in Me. Eek!

  4. What college team were you cheering on? I was cheering on JMU and then Indiana with Coach Cignetti from JMU! The snow really is a mess with all this ice on top and super hard to shovel if you didn't do it before the ice came. See you tomorrow!

  6. How is your new sweet baby doing? He is the cutest! What does he think of the snow? I think it is funny that you say 7 inches is not alot of snow- I would agree. Is everything closed down there or is it business as usual?

  7. Yep 7 inches of snow in London would bring us all to a standstill. My son had about 8-10 inches up in Vermont at the weekend but he was still at work on Monday and although the schools were closed on Monday they reopened on Tuesday. So much more prepared. Your pup is cute but yes must be hard work at this time of year.
