Monthly Musings August 2025: Back to School/Fall Preview

Hey there Besties. I am starting this post off in a non-typical way. When Holly and I chose our topics way back in the beginning of the year, Back-to-School and a Fall Preview seemed perfectly appropriate for late August. Flash forward to the events in Minnesota yesterday and I am honestly feeling pretty sad. If there is one thing I try really hard to do on this site, it's not to be a tone deaf a-hole (yup, I just semi-cursed on this site). I know it's a little hard to push out a back-to-school post like nothing happened yesterday.

All school shootings are horrible, they need to stop, and they are totally senseless. I wish I had the answers on how to stop these senseless acts of violence. This one hit me even harder because this was at a Catholic school, much like we have been part of for close to twenty years. Two of my friends are Catholic school principals, I have numerous friends who are Catholic school employees, including two of my Best friends. This one just hit harder.

That being said, I know I have a commitment as a host and to my readers to bring a little Joy when things get scary and hard. I just wanted to share why this post may not be the post I intended to write when I woke up this morning and may feel a little brief. I also didn't want to act like nothing happened. See a-hole reference above.

Ok, now on to the questions.

1. Any back-to-school traditions?

Now that Hockey Guy is in college way out of state, the first day of school, really classes, looks different. He is in a college town and there are these sweet ladies that you can reach out to for things to make days like this fun. Sunday afternoon I sent them a text and a Venmo and on Monday afternoon, they delivered a half dozen Crumbl cookies to him.

2. How do you celebrate the first day of school?

Oh this looks different when they are in college. I celebrate that I got a text telling me about how his classes went.

3. Favorite fall back-to-school meals?

When in doubt, taco meatballs.

4. What are your go-to outfits for early fall?

Mostly for work, I grab a great pair of dress pants and a blouse. I am trying to wear more dresses because they are easier. Let's see if I can do this for early fall.

5. Do kids go back to school before or after Labor Day in your area?

All schools are before Labor Day now.

6. When do you start to decorate for early fall?

I may start this weekend with a sunflower theme but I won't really decorate for fall until mid to late September.

7. How do you get back into the fall routine?

It is a little jarring for me right now because so much of what we focused on was school and hockey this time of year. Work stays the same and will be really ramping up for me in the next few weeks.

Running Daddy and I are just trying to exhale a bit, watch some college football and then live-stream the college hockey games.

8. What are you most looking forward to this fall?

I am looking forward to choosing a big SEC football game watch party at our house. I need to get on that! I also can't wait to watch Hockey Guy play his second year of college hockey both in person and live-stream.

I am looking forward to going to a college football game and all of the fun tailgating antics that come with it.

9. Do you decorate for fall? If so, when?

Yes, I am all about fall inside and out.  And yes, I realize this is basically the same question as #6 and that is totally on me.

10. What feels like fall to you?

Jeans, boots, pumpkin spice lattes and bonfires with friends.
