Monthly Musings May 2024: Getting Ready for Summer/Memorial Day

Hey there Besties! This month has been a wonderful whirlwind and I have had to step away from the site for a bit, but I could not miss Monthly Musings! Today Holly and I are hosting our monthly link-up party and our focus for May is Getting Ready for Summer and Memorial Day. Who's ready to kick off summer? I know I am!

1. What are you looking forward to this summer?

This summer so much is going to be new for us with Hockey Guy going off to college in the fall. I am looking forward to the three of us spending as much time together this summer. I am also looking forward to his college orientation in July and also helping him pick out items for his dorm room.

2. Favorite summer traditions?

I love our family vacations and always love going to Hilton Head. It's truly my favorite place.

I also love working in the yard even though I often list it as things I dread in What's Up Wednesday. Running Daddy and I have been working really hard on our landscaping and things are really paying off.

I also love getting together with friends and sharing a cocktail when the weather is great.

3. Favorite summer recipe?

A super easy recipe is my easy caprese grilled chicken. It's so Good for a busy week or when you want to have a healthy casual meal on a weekend.

4. Summer vacation plans?

Honestly, I am not sure what we are going to do about a summer vacation this year. With orientation and then move it, it might be a little tricky to pull something together. We may also do some Thanksgiving and Christmas break travel, so stay tuned on this topic.

5. Cole slaw or potato salad? Recipe to share?

I like a little bit of coleslaw, meaning about a tablespoon full. I used to not it eat it at all but a friend of ours makes really Good coleslaw.

I like potato salad of all kinds. I prefer to not have egg in mine. Eggs in potato salad is just not a New England thing. I don't have a recipe to share with you but I personally think that potato salad is all about the mayonnaise. In New England, that would be Cains and in the Southeast, it's all about Duke's.

6. Favorite ice cream or frozen treat?

My favorite ice cream of all time is black raspberry with chocolate jimmies. Jimmies are sprinkles if you are not from New England.

I also love an old-fashioned ice cream sandwich and it is really that I miss being gluten-free. I am also very nostalgic lately about a root beer popsicle/Italian ice. Do they even make those anymore?

7. Favorite summer beverage?

One of my favorite recipes is actually a cocktail recipe for the Skinny Colada. It has all of the taste of a pina colada without the heaviness. You can find the recipe here.

I also really got into aperol spritz last summer and I currently have a craving for one!

8. Beach, lake or mountain?

We typically go to the beach as a family but I did grow up going to the lake in the summer and I do like the lake. I think lake trips are a really Good options if you only have a few days.

9. Best ways to beat the heat in the summer?

Our family room in our basement level is always really cool and a Good way to beat the heat.

Our pool is in our neighborhood and it always feels a Good ten degrees cooler over there. Plus you can always take a quick dip in the pool.

10. Favorite sunscreen?

I honestly think that Trader Joe's has some really Good sunscreen. I always stock up on the spray versions at this point in the summer.

A friend of mine also gave me the La Roche Posay sunscreen and I have been using that for the last few weeks before I put on makeup. It provides a Good base and doesn't cause breakouts or irritation.

This is a topic that I definitely want you to weigh in on in the comments. Please share your favorite sunscreen with us.

That's all I have for today as we get ready for summer. If you also wrote for Monthly Musings, please link up with us below.

  1. I think our summer is going to feel so different this year too with gearing up for college. Alec has orientation next month so we do at least have most of July open but I also know he wants to work extra hours at the cafe so squeezing in shopping time could be tough. We opted for a Christmas break vacation this year instead.

  2. I think this is my first time visiting your blog. Thanks for hosting! I live on a lake so summer is king here. I do love the beach but we don't deal with sand in the house here so that's a plus. Enjoy your summer and getting your son settled into college. It's an exciting season full of mixed emotions.
