Monthly Musings June 2026: Happy Birthday America 250

I am looking forward to Monthly Musings this month and not for the reasons why you might think. Even though I am the host, I could use a little inspiration myself when it comes to the Fourth of July and America 250 this year. When I was drafting the topics for Monthly Musings earlier this year, a focus on America 250 was a must. Now that we are weeks away, I am a little stumped for how I want to celebrate. It could be that I have my second sinus infection in as many months. A sinus infection definetly gets in the way of any sparks of inspiration.

Since I seem to need a burst of creativity for America 250, I am glad Monthly Musings is today. Hopefully the writers that link up with my can help get the ball rolling on my Fourth of July plans. I will do my Best, despite my annoying congestion to share some red, white and blue with you as well.

1. Are you excited about America 250?

I love the idea that our country is 250 years old. It is such a cool thing. I am struggling a little bit because I feel that because I work in Washington, DC and l live right near Mount Vernon, I should somehow be more excited about America 2501.

There are definitely some cool events over the next few weeks. We were supposed to go see Martina McBride this evening on the National Mall as part of the concert series to celebrate the Semiquincentennial but things went sideways when the artists thought they had signed onto one type of event but it was shaping up to be somethings else. No Martina tonight. I am sad because we had a fun group going and Running Daddy has never seen her live. Welcome to what it is like living in Washington, DC.

2. Did you purchase any fun America 250 items?

I didn't purchase this beautiful bracelet from enewton designs, I actually got it in a gift bag in from a lovely event this spring. I love it and wear it all the time. It's a total classic design that will go well beyond the events of the next few weeks.

3. Do you make any red, white and blue themed appetizers, sides or desserts?

I acutally don't have a 4th of July dish, but I am looking for inspiration on this one.

4. Do you like fireworks?

I like to watch professional fireworks. I am not really a fan of people setting them off in the neighborhood. Does that make me a Karen?

5. Do you dress in red, white and blue themes?

I try to dress in red, white and blue or close to on the day of, but I don't go overboard.

My favorite red, white and blue item right now is this super cute J Crew Factory lobster sweater I got on super sale last Labor Day. My hunch is that it will be way too hot to wear for the Fouth of July but I have worn it quite a bit in the spring and fall.

6. What are your plans for the Fouth of July?

I am very excited that we have a bonus day off on the third of July. Running Daddy and I may go to a concert that night. We are keeping an eye on the weather and if it is nice as the day draws closer then we will buy tickets. There are only lawn tickets left, so that is why we are waiting to buy tickets.

We are not sure of our plans for the actual Fouth of July. I feel like it is sneaking up on me.

7. Do you remember the bicentennial in 1976?

Yes, I was only six years old at the time but I remember it being a really big deal. I feel like the 200th birthday was a bigger deal than the 250, but that could also be because I was six years old at the time and everything seems like a biggger deal when you are six.

8. What is your favorite patiotic song?

On the corny side, I do love "Proud to Be an American" by Lee Greenwood. I was recently at an event and they closed the event with this song. Everyone sang along. It was a bipartisan event and it actually gave me hope that at times, we can all come together at times.

I also really love "Coming to America" by Neil Diamond. I have always loved this song and one of my fondest memories was seeing him in concert on September 30, 2001 and he opened his show with this song. At that time, it was starting to feel a little less scary after 9/11 in Washington and like we could almost breathe again. Neil opening the show with this song was exactly what we needed.

9. Favorite 4th of July Memory?

We had some fun times when we used to go to the beach when Hockey Guy was little. We had some fun times with the Firecracker 5K, parade and fireworks at night.

10. Have you every participated in a local 4th of July parade or event?

I have never been in a 4th of July parade but I have attended several.

I am looking for a little inspiration for the holiday coming up so I am looking forward to hearing what the writers who link up with us have for the 4th of July. You can check them out below.
